“ Almost four months after my previous review, Nijiya Market in San Francisco's Japantown remains an excellent spot for Japanese groceries. Their consistency in quality, selection, and overall shopping experience keeps me coming back. The sales are always interesting, featuring discounts on specialty Japanese goods that can be hard to find elsewhere. The prepared foods section is just as good as ever--I still enjoy their simple yet satisfying futomaki rolls and fresh bento boxes, which are always well-made and flavorful. If I'm lucky, I can grab a freshly made Kare pan near the front checkout before they sell out. One of my favorite things about Nijiya is exploring their snack aisles. There's always something new to try, whether it's a seasonal limited-edition snack, unique Japanese chips, or high-quality sweets. Their pantry staples are amazing, too--everything from premium soy sauces and miso pastes to high-quality rice, noodles, and dashi stock. It's the perfect place to stock up on essential ingredients for Japanese cooking. The store is well-organized, making it easy to find what I need, though it can get cramped inside on busy weekends. The fresh meat section is excellent, with well-marbled beef for yakiniku, thinly sliced cuts for shabu-shabu, and sushi-grade seafood. The alcohol selection is another highlight, featuring a great variety of Japanese beers, sakes, and umeshu, including some harder-to-find options. Security remains efficient and respectful, and the parking garage next door makes shopping here convenient. A useful tip: If you spend over $30, they'll comp part of the parking fee--usually $2, which is a nice perk. ”

“ Nijiya Market, located across from the Japantown Center, is a compact yet well-stocked Japanese grocery store offering a wide variety of items, including frozen foods, pre-packaged ready-to-eat meals, fresh groceries, and unique snacks. One of the highlights is their affordable sushi, making it a great spot for a quick and budget-friendly meal. Though the store is relatively small and somewhat cramped, they efficiently utilize the space to pack in a diverse selection of products, much like a traditional Asian market. I didn't interact much with the staff beyond the cashier, but the checkout process was quick and seamless, despite the number of people shopping. During my visit, I picked up a fun "education candy" sushi-making kit for just $5, which was a great find. Overall, the prices here are reasonable, and it's a solid spot for Japanese groceries and convenient meals. ”

“ Nijiya Market in Japantown has always been a favorite Go to! My son dances for the Golden State Warriors, and in between practices, we go here!!! If u want great selection of sushi and sashimi go here!! Awesome selection, great prices, there is something for everyone! My kids love getting the sashimi combo, the sushi onigiri, and bento boxes. Parking garage right next to Nijiya if there is no street parking available. A lot of Asian ingredients for u to make a meal at home, go here and help support!! We will be back! ”

“ Haven't been here in a while bc I remember the food not being that fresh. Went back recently and boy was I surprised. I went kinda late in the day with a sushi craving and got all the rolls, hamachi, tuna, bimbim bop bowl, the age mochi...wow was I impressed! No wonder there so many people here. If you don't have time to go out for sushi this place is awesome. Fairly priced and popular. So try to get there early. Their fish is so fresh and I also tried their raw scallop and it so fresh you could taste its sweetness. Don't sleep on Nijiya. So good! ”

You'll also find a fantastic variety of imported produce and unique bottled beverages that add to the authentic experience. “ The items in the fridge near the entrance are fresh & delicious. Quality commiserates with the price. Enjoyed the negi hamachi rolls, inari & maki sushi. Queue can be long during events (Cherry Blossom, etc). ”

“ Nijya Market in Japantown boasts a wide selection of refrigerated premade meals - bento, sushi, katsu, and more at reasonable prices. The sushi is high quality, and if you prefer to make your own, you'll find premium sashimi grade cuts in the back of the store. On a weekend, they had an excellent variety, and I was pleasantly surprised to see fresh scallop (on sale!). Other goodies that caught my eye were single serve ice cream I haven't seen outside of Japan, fresh wasabi, a variety of mochi, fish cake soup kits, Japanese pickles, and a colorfully enticing snack aisle. The store itself can feel a bit cramped at times, but it's clean and well-organized. There's plenty of paid and street parking around the store. I wish their produce section and Japanese toothpaste selection were a tad more affordable and extensive, but for excellent premade meals and some fun finds, Nijya does it right! ”

“ Standing strong on the corner amongst touristy shopping malls and restaurants, Nijiya Market provides a livable and residential feeling to it's block in San Francisco's Japantown. Only a 15 minute walk from my current home, it's a great place for me to quickly run in and grab whatever I need - nostalgic snacks, niche cooking ingredients, Japanese beers and sakes, foreign household products, and Asian beauty items. The produce tends to be pretty expensive - but the best deal is the daily-made bento boxes that range from raw fish sushi to katsu pork bowls. Honestly these bento boxes are not the tastiest food in the area, but they are a great cheap take-out dinner if you come within an hour from closing time when the leftovers are 20% off. They offer chopsticks as well as fresh packets of ginger and wasabi at the counter with your purchase. The store is very cramped with lots of skinny aisles, very reminiscent of other traditional independent Asian stores in & outside of the city. It can be INSANELY CROWDED around lunch and dinner time, especially on weekends, creating a really miserable shopping experience for when I just want to quickly run errands. I usually walk or take the bus here and avoid driving as parking is hard to come by. There is a paid parking lot directly next to the store as well as some paid street parking on the block. If driving, it's helpful to park closer to the residential areas and just walk but do be careful about car break-ins as there is a lot of foot traffic & tourists around the area. On the exit out toward the parking lot, there are lots of flyers promoting local cultural events and organizations. Definitely recommend always checking out what's happening even if you don't live in the area! ”
